Wassmann Elected to Polar Artists Group
01/20/07 The Polar Artists Group is pleased to announce the election of painter and photographer Cliff Wassmann to the Canadian based organization.
The Polar Artists Group (PAG) is a not-for-profit, International society of polar artists dedicated to promoting awareness of the polar regions. The PAG links polar artists and scientists by conservation and promoting awareness of the polar regions, and effects of climate change on the environment and people through art, education, and special projects. This unique collaborative relationship between artist and scientists increases the public's awareness and understanding of polar science, creates a new medium for scientific outreach, and engages artists in the early stages of research communications and outreach. The Polar Artists Group links directly with International Polar Year research and helps meet IPY outreach and public awareness goals.
The PAG was founded in 2006 by Linda Mackey, Val Russell, and Kathy Haycock in partnership with IPY. All three founders are Arctic Quest artists and recently celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Northwest Passage with a historic voyage to the High Arctic. The group Arctic Quest has embarked on an extensive exhibition schedule. The founders plan to take the experience gained from Arctic Quest, and with the help of IPY include international artists and promote the artists and scientists concerns for the polar regions to a global audience. Artists with an interest in the polar regions will be able to receive the latest information on polar science, travel, exhibitions, and educational opportunities. The website also serves as a great reference for international media, galleries, and museums.
The PAG includes many very accomplished international artists who have either had a project endorsed by IPY, or been elected as a member based on their artwork and passion for the polar regions.
The PAG is currently planning several ambitious projects including an annual Passion for the Poles Conference, heritage site restoration, book publications, Teacher’s Corner, and travel opportunities.
PAG will also be very involved in fund-raising and education to donate to polar based charities with similar goals.
