Adams,
Ansel (1902-1984), is anAmerican photographer
remembered for his extraordinary technical innovations
and his breathtaking representations of immense
landscapes. Originally a student of music, Adams
pursued photography as an avocation from 1916
until 1931. In 1932, he and Willard Van Dyke formed
Group f.64, an association of photographers who
combined large format cameras and small apertures
to capture nature's infinite variety of light
and textures. Adams was instrumental in fostering
public acceptance of photography as a fine art.
In 1940 he helped found the world's first museum
collection of photographs at the Museum of Modern
Art in New York City, and in 1946 he established
the first academic department to teach photography
as a profession at the California School of Fine
Arts in San Francisco, the city of his birth.

"In some photographs, the essence of light and space
dominate; in others, the substance of rock and wood
and the luminous insistence of growing things. It
is my intention to present, through the medium of
photography, intuitive observations of the natural
world which may have meaning to spectators." -Ansel
