Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is regarded by many as the most important French painter of the 20th century. He was the leader of the Fauvist movement, a group of artists whose style emphasized intense color and vigorous brushstrokes. He infused meaning into his paintings with a careful arrangement of colors and lack of detail, using bright color and strong lines to create a sense of movement.

Matisse became interested in art as a young adult. He took classes and began painting in earnest while recovering from an attack of appendicitis. In 1891 he went to Paris to study to become a professional artist. Although Paris was already familiar with the Postimpressionism of Paul Cézanne, Paul Gauguin, and Vincent van Gogh, Matisse's style at that time reflected the style of the 17th-century Dutch canvases favored by the French Realists of the 1850s. When Matisse exhibited at the conservative Salon de la Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts in 1896, he was elected an associate member.

After 1899 he ceased to exhibit at the Salon and began to associate with artists interested in new forms of modern art. In 1901 he exhibited paintings in the Salon des Indépendants, which had been founded in 1884 to show the work of painters who were not accepted in the official juried exhibitions. Eventually many of his contemporaries turned toward Expressionism, Cubism, or neo-traditionalism. Matisse had no interest in going in such a direction and remained true to his passion for pure color for the remainder of his life.

Matisse was diagnosed with an intestinal disorder in 1941 and suffered from asthma and heart problems. It was in this condition that he completed the magnificent Chapelle du Rosaire in Vence. Despite health problems in his later years, his last work showed no signs of negativity. On the contrary, it is the most daring, most accomplished, and most serenely optimistic of his entire career.

"I plunged head down into work, on the principle I had heard, all my young life, expressed by the words 'Hurry up!' Like my parents, I hurried up in my work, pushed by I don't know what, by a force which today I perceive as being foreign to my life as a normal man."
