Matisse
was diagnosed with an intestinal disorder
in 1941 and suffered from asthma and heart
problems. It was in this condition that
he completed the magnificent Chapelle
du Rosaire in Vence. Despite health problems
in his later years, his last work showed
no signs of negativity. On the contrary,
it is the most daring, most accomplished,
and most serenely optimistic of his entire
career.
"I
plunged head down into work, on the principle
I had heard, all my young life, expressed
by the words 'Hurry up!' Like my parents,
I hurried up in my work, pushed by I don't
know what, by a force which today I perceive
as being foreign to my life as a normal
man."
