"Accidents, try to change them it’s impossible. The accidental reveals man".

Pablo Picasso (1881-1973) was one of the most prolific and influential artists of the 20th century. He excelled in painting, sculpture, etching, stage design, and ceramics, creating thousands of works. He launched cubism, with Georges Braque, during the time period 1906-1925, and he introduced the technique of collage.

Born in Spain in 1881, the son of José Ruiz Blasco, a professor of drawing, and Maria Picasso López, his exceptional artistic talent was evident by the age of 10. His family moved to La Coruña, where studied at the Fine Arts School. When it became apparent Picasso would surpass his father's talents, his father shifted his own ambitions to those of his son, providing him with models and support for his first exhibition there at the age of 13.

In 1895, Picasso attended the art school La Llotia in Barcelona. He quickly achieved success as a painter and in 1897 was awarded an honorable mention in Madrid at the Fine Arts Exhibition for his painting "Science and Charity." In the autumn of 1897, he went to Madrid and entered the Royal Academy of San Fernando. He did not appreciate the method of teaching there and spent time in the city, recording life around him. He enjoyed observing the cafés, the brothels and the streets of the city, where he frequented the city's famous cabaret of intellectuals and artists, Els Quatre Gats.

Picasso was initially famous for his pioneering role in Cubism, but he continued to develop his art with a pace and vitality comparable to the accelerated technological and cultural changes of the twentieth century. Each change embodied a radical new idea, and it might be said that Picasso lived several artistic lifetimes. In 1900, he went to Paris with his friend Casagemas and became familiar with impressionist works.

He was surrounded by difficulty, and the suicide of his friend Casagemas had a profound impact on the young Picasso. Under these circumstances, he began the works of his so-called "blue period", which he would fully develop upon his return to Barcelona in 1903-1904. During this time, he would spend his days in Paris studying the masterworks at the Louvre and his nights enjoying the company of fellow artists at cabarets like the Lapin Agile.

Picasso began his "rose period" around 1905, in which the sadness and misery of his blue period was substituted for the livelier world of theater and circus. In 1906, he stayed for three months in Catalonia. His paintings there reflected the colors of Mediterranean landscapes, and he began the cubist approach he would later develop in Paris. In 1907, Picasso painted "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon," one of the most important paintings of the twentieth century. At this time, he met Georges Braque and together they developed the new style called Cubism. Around 1913, Picasso began to include collages in his cubist works and became enthused by this new technique, which allowed him to give his work new textures.

In 1917, Picasso did the set and costume design for Serge Diaghilev's ballet "Parade." This contact with the theater world, as well as a trip to Italy, brought him back to figurative painting with a new interest in characters from the Italian comedy. He alternated this interest with his investigation into cubism. During the 1920s, Picasso continued to design theater sets and painted in Cubist, Classical and Surreal modes. In late April of 1937, after hearing news of the saturation bombing of the civilian target of Guernica, Spain by the Nazi Luftwaffe, Picasso responded with his great anti-war painting, "Guernica."

The l950s saw the beginning of a number of large retrospective exhibits of his works. During this time he began to paint a series of works conceived as free variations on old master paintings. In the 1960s, he produced a monumental 50-foot sculpture for the Chicago Civic Center. In 1970, Picasso donated more than 800 of his works to the Berenguer de Aguilar Palace Museum in Barcelona. Pablo Picasso continued producing all types of works using all types of bases and techniques. His incessant creativity characterized him, making him one of the great geniuses of our time.
